DISINFO: Western Europeans perceive the Poles as “Eastern barbarians” and “Slavic pigs”
SUMMARY
The media in the countries of the “Old Europe” promote one message: Poland is a disgrace to the European integration and its behaviour threatens the existence of the European Union. In this situation, everything that Europeans think about the Poles comes to light. They had the same thoughts about Poland for centuries – Eastern barbarians, Slavic pigs. Historically, Poland has been considered as a border where Europe ends and Asia begins. Russia has been unequivocally recognised as Asia, but Western Europeans have never considered Poland as a full-fledged part of Europe.
RESPONSE
This message is part of a larger Kremlin disinformation narrative about Eastern and Central Europe. The pro-Kremlin media actively promote the message that Poland and the Baltic States are not a “real Europe” and they do not belong to the EU. These EU member states are regularly accused of being pro-American “puppets” and a “dead weight” for the EU.
The claim that Western Europe does not consider Poland as a fully-fledged part of Europe is ungrounded – Poland is an integral part of the European civilization, an active EU member and one of the most euro-optimistic countries in the Union. The claim that Western Europe perceives the Poles as “barbarians and pigs” is an attempt to humiliate the Poles.
The EU enlargement rounds of 2004 and 2007 have been clearly perceived as an impressive success for the European Union and its new member states. After their EU accession, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe have made substantial social and economic success, turning into one of the most dynamic parts of the EU.
