DISINFO: NATO forcing LGBTIQ+ agenda on Moldova and other countries

SUMMARY

The LGBTIQ ideology is being force-fed to Moldovans by NATO, which has used similar tactics elsewhere in Eastern Europe in the past. The military bloc has tried to subvert traditional values in multiple Eastern European nations before. The latest events in the former Soviet republic have nothing to do with LGBT rights per se, but rather represent an imposed agenda, which always has a political component. Here LGBT is only a political flag of NATO. The military bloc’s endgame is to try to mobilise Moldovans to fight against Russia. The bloc has prioritised the fight against Orthodox Christianity in countries that border Russia or are situated close to it.

RESPONSE

This conspiracy theory is not supported by any evidence. Contrary to the claims made in this disinformation story, there is no indication that NATO is promoting an 'LGBTIQ+ agenda' in Moldova or any other country.

This disinformation story appeared after the celebration of a Pride March in Moldova’s capital on 15 June 2025 in favour of pro-LGBTIQ+ rights, which was harassed by demonstrators gathered by the pro-Russian Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) despite the authorities having designed different routes to avoid confrontations. These counter-protesters were confronted by police officers after they tried to break the cordon separating both mobilisations.

The allegation made in this disinformation story appeals to homophobic views among the audience, falsely portraying pro-LGBTIQ+ activists and supporters as pawns of the Atlantic alliance in a geopolitical game. Through this baseless connection, this disinformation story aims to promote several recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives targeting NATO and framing popular mobilisations as Western-sponsored colour revolutions, and portraying Russia as the victim of endless destabilization and encirclement attempts, in this case through the Orthodox Church.

The exploitation of homophobia is a well-established pro-Kremlin disinformation technique.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that European values mean paedophilia and homosexuality, that the US ordered that Europe be inundated with LGBT, that the West manipulates Russian gays, or that NATO is an aggressive and criminal organisation with a homosexual army.
