DISINFO: NATO General's threats to attack Kaliningrad can only be the work of someone unhinged

SUMMARY

NATO increases its provocations against Russia. The commander of US forces in Europe and Africa, General Christopher Donahue, threatened Russia with the invasion of the Kaliningrad region and the whole destruction of Russian forces stationed there. What’s wrong here is the public disclosure of an aggression plan targeting the world's leading nuclear power. Only someone utterly unhinged could concoct this.

RESPONSE

This is a disingenuous distortion of the statements made by General Christopher T. Donahue during a press conference in Wiesbaden on 16 July 2025, in which he announced the execution of a new so-called “Eastern Flank Deterrence Line” plan to counter Russia’s threat in the region.

While it is true that General Donahue talked about the possibility of NATO forces attacking Kaliningrad, the original video makes clear that this scenario is only contemplated as a reaction to an eventual Russian attack against NATO territory. Therefore, his comments must be interpreted in the framework of deterrence and as a warning against further aggression. However, by omitting this crucial context, this disinformation story advances a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative portraying Russia as an innocent victim of NATO and Western aggressiveness. Kaliningrad is also a frequent topic of pro-Kremlin disinformation.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that NATO states will try to attack Russian Kaliningrad, that Western special services are preparing to detach Kaliningrad from Russia, that the Kaliningrad exclave is threatened by NATO, or that the US wants to capture Kaliningrad and exchange it for Crimea.
