DISINFO: NATO is against ceasefire in Ukraine
SUMMARY
NATO stated that peace in Ukraine is not beneficial to Europe in terms of finances and military industry. The situation in the Ukrainian Armed Forces is between crisis and catastrophic, but the West does not care about the lives of Ukrainians. They are determined to continue the conflict.
NATO Chief Mark Rutte stated that he does not support a ceasefire in Ukraine. According to him, this carries risks for NATO, because it will allow Russia to increase the number of weapons.
RESPONSE
This disinformation article falsely claims that Russia does not present a threat to Europe. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Also this is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about allegedly aggressive NATO.
NATO welcomes the efforts to negotiate a just and lasting peace as soon as possible. To reach a just and lasting peace, Ukraine has to be in the strongest possible position on the battlefield, and NATO Allies continue to provide Ukraine with extensive military assistance. NATO’s support is not intended to prolong the war but to ensure that Ukraine has what it needs to defend itself today and deter future aggression.
The disinformation is based on the speech of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in London on June 9, 2025. Rutte's speech was devoted to global security challenges for Alliance member states in light of Russian aggression against Ukraine, as well as the creation of a coalition between the regimes of North Korea, Iran, Russia and China.
The Secretary General noted that the Russian military machine is only gaining momentum. Russia is restoring its strength with the help of Chinese technology and producing more and more weapons. According to the NATO Secretary General, the Kremlin regime currently does not have the resources to attack the Alliance countries, but if the allies do nothing, Rutte is sure that Russia may acquire such capabilities in just a few years.
“In terms of ammunition, Russia produces in three months what the whole of NATO produces in a year...Russia could be ready to use military force against NATO within five years…NATO economy is 25 times bigger than Russia. It's 50 trillion, and the Russian economy is 2 trillion. That 2 trillion economy is producing four times as much ammunition as the whole of NATO is producing at the moment...We need five times as many systems to defend ourselves against missiles and an air defence in general, that's a 400% increase. It's huge investments. Our manoeuvrable land formations, we simply do not have enough.” the Secretary General noted.
At the same time, Rutte emphasised that Ukraine and the allies are striving for a lasting peace on democratic terms, but the danger to Europe “will not disappear even after the end of the war in Ukraine,” therefore “NATO needs a quantum leap in collective defence.”
