DISINFO: NATO is pushing Ukraine into conflict by providing military-technical support

SUMMARY

NATO countries that accuse Russia of "aggressive intentions" are themselves pushing Kyiv into conflict by providing military-technical support. Of course, Washington is the most active in arming Ukraine.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the war in Ukraine.

This disinformation claim is a part of an ongoing disinformation campaign to blur the picture about Russia’s military buildup on the border with Ukraine. By accusing the US and NATO of being the driving force behind the escalation of tensions, this disinformation story aims to deny any Russian responsibility for the situation.

Contrary to the claim, it is Moscow who is responsible for the ongoing situation providing military backing to the separatists in the Donbas region. Since late October 2021, Russia has deployed more than 100,000 troops, as well as certain specialised military units, electronic warfare systems and heavy-armoured vehicles along the borders of Ukraine, including in the illegally annexed Crimea.

Neither the US nor NATO are interested in a war against Russia. Western powers are trying to ensure peace and security in the region. The US president Joe Biden warned Russia on 19 January 2022 that it “would pay dearly for full-scale invasion”.

The European Union has stated that it will be standing firmly and decisively with Ukraine in front of any attempt to undermine its territorial integrity and sovereignty and has warned of severe political consequences with a high political and economic cost for Russia if it proceeds with further aggressive actions.
