DISINFO: NATO is the US tool for hegemony in the new world order

SUMMARY

Almost all the results of the NATO summit in Vilnius could have been predicted without turning on the television or checking Telegram.

It was enough just to understand one thing: NATO is the main (if not the only) tool of the United States in the struggle for its hegemony in the new, emerging world order. And decisions at the summit will be made based solely on American interests - neither the Europeans nor Ukraine are getting a single slice of this pie.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation about NATO and the US presence in Europe, as well as Europe’s alleged lack of sovereignty.

The statement was made in the context of the NATO summit in Vilnius.

NATO is a collective defence alliance, which includes today 31 member states. Decisions are adopted through consultation and consensus. Countries decide to join NATO not to be “under US control”, but on a voluntary basis to receive the protection of the alliance, as the cases of Sweden and Finland have shown. The most important players in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation are the member states themselves. As a political alliance, NATO promotes democratic values. Regarding the military agenda, the organisation is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes. See more information about NATO's purposes here as well as a short history of NATO.

Similar disinformation narratives claim that NATO is a new type of US colonialism, that European elites obey Washington, that EU and NATO member states are subordinate to the US, that NATO serves one master, that the US needs NATO to keep the Europeans under their tight control, that when the US orders, the EU complies, that the US created NATO to keep European states in the bridle and NATO forces could be used against European states opposing the US’s wishes.
