DISINFO: NATO may have destroyed undersea cables in the Red Sea, as with Nord Stream

SUMMARY

Four telecommunications cables were damaged in the Red Sea, affecting a quarter of Asia's internet traffic to Europe and threatening to cut off the entire world from the network. The West accused the Houthis, but what if it was a NATO operation, just as with the Nord Stream gas pipelines? One should ask what happens with all the fleets that NATO has sent to the area, if they do not have some kind of responsibility. Mass media of disinformation always looked to one side and never asked: what if it was an accident caused by a NATO ship with its anchor, or even to cause a new conflict and increase the chances that NATO and the US will have a pretext to carry out a punitive operation on Yemen?

RESPONSE

Conspiracy theory not backed by any evidence. There is nothing to support the claim that NATO was involved in the destruction of undersea internet cables in the Red Sea. Some were damaged accidentally due to the situation caused by the Houthis of Yemen. There is speculation about the Houthis deliberately damaging the cables, as this group had previously discussed such an operation in a Telegram channel.

Also, this disinformation story blames NATO for the sabotage of the Nord Stream 2 pipelines as if it was an established fact, when there is no actual evidence backing this allegation. In February 2024, Danish authorities closed the investigation because assessing that there were insufficient grounds to pursue a criminal case in Denmark.

At the moment of the publication of this disinformation story, responsibility for this sabotage remains a mystery.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that the Houthis only attacked ships from Israel or heading to Israeli harbours, that NATO finally found a rival of its size in the Houthis of Yemen, that events in Israel and Ukraine are no accident as the US tried to create areas of instability, or that the truth about Nord Stream sabotage by the US could destroy NATO.
