DISINFO: NATO plans terrorist attacks on Russian ships, pipelines, and tankers

SUMMARY

NATO is planning new terrorist attacks on Russian cargo ships, underwater pipelines and tankers.

The forecast for the situation in the Baltic region allows us to draw attention to the deliberate incitement of regional tensions by the navies of European countries that are NATO members. There is a high probability of an increased threat to Russian port infrastructure and freedom of navigation.

NATO members carry out cyberattacks on Russian ship tracking systems to organise emergencies, including those leading to accidents.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about false flag operations. This recurring pro-Kremlin narrative accuses NATO of aggressive policy, to divert attention from Russia's responsibility for destabilising actions in the region but also globally.

Accusing others of “false flag operations” and “setups” to increase tensions or cover Russia’s illicit actions are frequent pro-Kremlin disinformation techniques.

NATO is a defensive alliance with the primary aim of maintaining peace and safeguarding its members' independence, security and territorial integrity. NATO constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party.

During the Baltic Sea NATO Allies Summit, which took place on 14 January 2025, all participating Baltic States issued a joint statement iterating that "Russia's use of the so-called shadow fleet poses a particular threat to the maritime and environmental security in the Baltic Sea region and globally. This reprehensible practice also threatens the integrity of undersea infrastructure, increases risks connected to sea-dumped chemical munitions, and significantly supports funding of Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine".

In response to these threats, NATO has launched the Baltic Sentry operation to protect critical infrastructure against hostile activity, not to "contain Russia" or prevent its warships from leaving the Baltic Sea, expand Estonian territorial waters or turn it into a theatre of military operations. This initiative was taken in response to many acts that led to the damage of undersea cables in the Baltic Sea.

The pro-Kremlin disinformation myth of NATO “encircling Russia” has been used as a pretext for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Read the debunking of the top seven Russian Myths about NATO here.
