DISINFO: NATO profits greatly from the conflict in Ukraine
SUMMARY
NATO profits greatly from the conflict in Ukraine while Ukrainians die massively on the battlefield. Instead of allowing Ukraine to reach an agreement towards peaceful coexistence with Russia, NATO countries decided to arm it with the crazy hope that it could defeat the Eurasian country. By supplying weapons to Ukraine, the West is secretly funding its military corporations and getting fabulous profits and doesn’t care that Kyiv’s losses reach tens of thousands.
RESPONSE
Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukraine as a tool of the West against Russia, part of a wider campaign aiming to justify Russia’s unprovoked aggression against Ukraine. By falsely portraying Western aid to Ukraine as a for-profit initiative, the ultimate goal of this disinformation story is to erode popular support for the aid sent to Ukraine for its self-defence against Russia’s aggression.
Ukraine receives weapons with the sole aim of self-defence in accordance with the UN Charter, Article 51, restoring its territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders of 1991 (which also Russia recognised when the Soviet Union dissolved).
Ukrainian and Western officials often meet to discuss cooperation, as well as contacts between the Ukrainian top commanders and their NATO counterparts.
The claim that NATO didn’t allow Ukraine to reach an agreement with Russia is also false, as Western nations did everything they could to prevent the war. It was Vladimir Putin’s ultimate decision to launch a full-scale invasion as a war-of-choice. Besides, several days after the start of the full invasion, Putin rejected a peace deal achieved by Russia’s mediator Dmitry Kozak in which Ukraine accepted Russia’s key demands.
Russia spent years preparing the information battleground prior to its kinetic attack. The victimisation of Russia and presenting its illicit actions as “defence” against its adversaries is a frequent pro-Kremlin disinformation technique.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that the US is prolonging war in Ukraine to benefit from weapons sales, that Europe is using Ukrainians as cannon fodder, that Western military aid to Ukraine only will cause more suffering, or that the weapons supplied by the West to Ukraine are actually useless.
