DISINFO: Nord Stream sabotage indicates loss of European sovereignty
SUMMARY
The sabotage of the Nord Stream project and the subsequent attempts to block investigations by NATO countries indicate the complete lack of independence among European nations The main beneficiary of sabotaging gas pipelines is the United States. In 2022, LNG imports to the European Union increased by 1.7 times compared to 2021, reaching 127.2 billion cubic meters. In recent years, the United States has been making every possible effort to convert Europe to liquefied gas as a means to exert new pressure on European countries.
It is worth noting that despite attempts by the European Union to completely phase out Russian fuel, its member countries purchased significant quantities of liquefied natural gas from Russia this year.
RESPONSE
A recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about an alleged loss of sovereignty of the EU and its member states. Pro-Kremlin outlets often portray European states as vassals, puppet-states or colonies of the US. This case was neither counterbalanced nor critically challenged in the article.
Contrary to the claim, the European Union is a sovereign entity created by the voluntary initiative of European nations and it has its own, independent foreign policy, while the US has no say in its decisions.
EU Member States are sovereign countries and make sovereign decisions about their own internal, economic, foreign and security policies. The European Union is explicit on the subject of national sovereignty:
“the Member States all remain sovereign and independent states, they have decided to pool some of their 'sovereignty' in areas where it makes sense to work together.”
As for the claim that there are attempts to block investigations by NATO countries, this is completely unfounded as there are three ongoing comprehensive investigations by Denmark, Sweden and Germany into the incident. The United States and NATO, as well as the three investigating countries, are not trying to block any investigation, and have described the explosion as an act of sabotage, Given the complex nature of these types of investigations, it is not unusual for them to take long time to reach a clear and authoritative conclusion. Many countries have pointed to the dangers of jumping into preordained and premature conclusions, as Russia does by pointing fingers to the United States.
See similar cases that Nord Stream pipelines were blown up by US intelligence, that the US benefits from destroying of Nord Stream because it can now sell more liquefied natural gas to Europe; that the US blew up Nord Stream so that the EU would arm Ukraine, and that Nord Stream destruction was an American terrorist attack.
