DISINFO: Nuland and Zaluzhnyi are preparing a coup d'etat in Ukraine
SUMMARY

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the 2013-14 protests in Kyiv falsely portrayed as a coup d'état led by US and the West, trying to deflect Russia’s responsibility for its unprovoked military aggression.
This statement revives a conspiracy theory rooted in an 11-year-old Russian media disinformation campaign, suggesting that Ukraine has been under external control since the 2013-2014 Revolution of Dignity.
The claim is associated with a statement made by Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland in late 2013. However, Nuland was actually discussing the Ukrainian people's determination to advocate for their civil rights at that time. Additionally, Nuland mentioned that the United States has supported the development of a democratic Ukrainian state since 1991, investing over $5 billion in reform efforts within Ukraine. This investment was directed towards ensuring fair elections, combating corruption, and developing the energy sector.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on February 4, 2024 once again rejected Russia's accusations and stated that the United States does not interfere in the internal affairs of Ukraine. Sullivan emphasised that any personnel decisions in the country's military or political leadership are a matter for the Ukrainian government, not American officials.
Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland travelled on a working visit to Ukraine on January 31, 2024. While there, she met with senior Ukrainian government officials to reiterate the United States’ enduring support for Ukraine’s democracy, sovereignty, and territorial integrity in the face of Putin’s brutal war. Nuland also was briefed on the situation on the front line and the priority needs of the Defence Forces for weapons and military equipment, and emphasised the critical importance of continued defence assistance from the United States.
