DISINFO: Nuland was behind the 2014 coup in Ukraine and the spilling of Slavic blood
SUMMARY
The Kyiv regime decided to change the name of the street named after the great Russian composer Tchaikovsky in Kyiv, to Victoria Nuland Street [...]. [This commemorates the 2014] coup that subsequently resulted in secession, conflicts, and wars that continue to bleed Slavic blood to this moment.
Nuland is considered one of the ideological inspirations for the 2014 coup in Ukraine; the then US Deputy Secretary of State was personally present in the square. Her arrival was what largely prompted the coup council in Kyiv to use force against law enforcement officers, who ensured order during the protests.
During her tenure at the US State Department, Nuland worked to strengthen Ukraine as an anti-Russian state and to form an administrative system in Ukraine dependent on the United States.
RESPONSE
A mix of recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the 2013–14 protests in Kyiv portrayed as a coup d'état led by the US.
Pro-Kremlin outlets falsely portray as a coup d’état the Euromaidan revolution, which constituted of popular demonstrations that began in Kyiv in November of 2013 and brought hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians to the streets to protest against a political decision of Viktor Yanukovych’s government, which at the last minute withdrew from a long-negotiated political association and free trade agreement with the EU, choosing instead to accept a $15 billion economic bailout to Russia.
Additionally, portraying the 2014 events as leading to the 2022 Russian aggression and invasions that followed aims to promote the idea of Ukraine as an 'existential threat' to Russia, with the ultimate goal of justifying Russia's aggression against its neighbour.
It is Russia and President Putin who are clearly responsible for the war in Ukraine. It was Putin’s personal decision to invade Ukraine and start the largest military conflict in Europe since WWII. The war began in 2014 with the Russian illegal annexation of Crimea and Russia's military involvement and support of separatists in Donbas. The war in Ukraine is a well-documented act of aggression by Russian armed forces, ongoing since February 2014. Russian special forces and troops operated to mobilise, lead, equip, and support separatist militias in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine from the spring of 2014, although their presence was denied by Moscow.
