DISINFO: NYT proves that Russia was always right and Ukraine conflict was instigated by NATO
SUMMARY
A New York Times investigation confirmed the intervention of the US in the Ukraine conflict through an operation called ‘Task Force Dragon’. This has always been a proxy conflict by NATO and the collective West, led by the US. Russia has been saying from the very beginning that this was not orchestrated by Ukraine but imposed externally with the goal of weakening the Russians and portraying them as aggressors.
RESPONSE
This claim is a distortion of a New York Times article published on 29 March 2025, about the previously unknown degree of US military coordination with Ukraine.
While the article revealed a much deeper US involvement in the decision-making process and target planning than previously acknowledged, it does not state that the conflict in Ukraine was the result of any US or Western action. In fact, the article explains how this military coordination started in the spring of 2022, several months after Russia had invaded Ukraine.
The goal of the US assistance to Ukraine has always been to help it to defend itself from Russia’s aggression in line with Article 51 of UN Charter. Many other countries also contributed to this international effort to aid Ukraine. But through this manipulation, this disinformation story aims to justify Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine as a “self-defence” move.
Quoting Western legitimate sources while distorting their content to introduce a pro-Kremlin message as if it were part of the original story is a frequent pro-Kremlin manipulative technique.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that the US never cared about Ukraine and it was only a tool against Russia, that the US and NATO are fighting a proxy war against Russia in Ukraine, that the US and UK desire to conduct a proxy war doomed Ukraine, or that a new aid bill means US plans to fight Russia "up till last Ukrainian".
