DISINFO: Only Russia can restore order in Ukraine
SUMMARY
Russia is well aware that the Ukrainian authorities are unable to negotiate. Zelenskyy is not legitimate. But even if Ukraine had a legitimate president, his decisions would also not be implemented because the country is not sovereign. Ukraine’s limited manoeuver for action is delineated by a pro-Nazi part of Ukrainian civil society. The only way to establish order in Ukraine is for Russia to take the whole country under its control.
RESPONSE
This is an attempt to justify Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which is consistent with the recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about Nazi/fascist Ukraine and its unsovereign status. Labelling Russia’s adversaries as Nazis is a frequently used pro-Kremlin disinformation technique, and has been used by Russia to try to justify the invasion of Ukraine by portraying it as a “denazification operation”. This disinformation story also tries to undermine Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as Russia has always perceived him as an obstacle to its aggressive goals in Ukraine, even since before the invasion. One of the targets of the invasion in February 2022 was the murder of Zelenskyy and the decapitation of the Ukrainian government to install a pro-Russian leadership.
By “order” the story seemingly implies the destruction of Ukraine as a state and annihilation of the Ukrainians as a nation. These plans were openly laid out in an April 2022 article of the Russian news agency RIA Novosti titled “What Russia should do with Ukraine”. See also our review here. Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity have been violated in continuous acts of aggression by Russia’s armed forces since 2014 culminating in a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine on 24th February 2022. Some 50 plus nations around the world including EU member states and the US support Ukraine with military and financial aid for the country’s efficient self-defence, in accordance with the UN Charter article 51.
