DISINFO: OPCW refused to cooperate on the Navalny case

SUMMARY

The secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) categorically refused to cooperate with Russia to investigate the (Alexei) Navalny case.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin narrative to deflect the blame from Russia, while blaming the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the lack of cooperation regarding the poisoning of opposition activist and politician Alexei Navalny with the Soviet-era nerve agent Novichok.

Contrary to the claim, Moscow maintains it is up to its domestic authorities to probe the poisoning in line with the CWC’s Article VII. And in December 2020, Moscow even refused to allow the OPCW to work independently from Russian experts.

That is why on 5 October 2021, 45 States have sent through the OPCW questions to Russia about the poisoning of Navalny, under Article IX of the Convention, in which they also asked Russia to explain why it had delayed a visit by OPCW inspectors to look into the Novichok claims.

See further disinformation claims in our database that Navalny is used as an instrument by Western special services; or that intelligence reveals that Navalny's poisoning may have been a ‘sacred sacrifice’, or that the OPCW report proves Navalny's case was prepared in advance, or that Navalny was poisoned with expired Novichok that is why he survived.
