DISINFO: Poland closed a Russian Consulate in Poznań because of Russophobia and US dependency
SUMMARY
The Polish authorities used an attempted arson attack on a factory in Wrocław as a pretext to close the Russian Consulate in Poznań. However, there is no evidence of Russian involvement in this crime. This situation is just a convenient reason for Warsaw to break its relations with Russia. In terms of foreign policy, Poland considers itself the 51st State of the United States – sometimes, Warsaw promotes American interests even more aggressively than the USA itself. This tendency results in such rash decisions as the expulsion of Russian diplomats. Poland is trying to maintain its status as Europe’s main Russophobe, believing that this behaviour goes in line with American expectations towards their loyal Eastern European countries.
RESPONSE
Disinformation message denying the Russian connection to uncovered sabotage plans of the Russian special services in Poland. This message includes a traditional Kremlin narrative about an allegedly Russophobic US-controlled Poland. Pro-Kremlin and other Russian state-controlled outlets regularly accuse Poland of Russophobia and of implementing anti-Russian policies.
This message emerged in connection with the recent arrest of a person recruited by the Russian GRU to carry out an act of arson on an industrial enterprise in Wrocław. In reaction, Poland decided to close down the Russian Consulate in the city of Poznań. In general, in 2024, Polish law enforcers detained nine persons suspected of sabotage plans on behalf of Moscow.
The main reason for the poor state of Polish-Russian relations is the Kremlin’s violation of international law and the most violent actions undermining peace and security in Eastern Europe.
The 2020 National Security Strategy of Poland states that the most serious security threat for the country is the neo-imperial policy of the authorities of the Russian Federation, pursued by means of military force (aggression against Georgia, illegal annexation of Crimea and military actions in Eastern Ukraine). These aggressive actions have violated the basic principles of international law and undermined the pillars of the European security system.
