DISINFO: Poland destroyed bilateral relations with Belarus by sanctions
SUMMARY
Currently, relations between Belarus and Poland are at an unprecedentedly low level – they are practically non-existent. It is not the fault of Belarus. It was not Belarus that introduced sanctions against Poland or closed border checkpoints. On the contrary, the Belarusian leader instructed the government to foster good neighbourly relations with Poland and to discuss problematic issues without preconditions. Unfortunately, this initiative has not been reciprocated by Poland. There exists an opportunity to turn a new page and start anew. However, the West wants to change the regime in Belarus.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, mirroring the claims of the Belarusian authorities, about an allegedly belligerent Poland, claiming that it is plotting against Belarus and its citizens, trying to destabilise and destroy the country.
The sole party responsible for the deterioration of Polish-Belarusian relations is the illegitimate Belarusian ruler, Alexander Lukashenka. In 2020, he falsified the results of the presidential elections and started an unprecedented wave of violent political repressions against peaceful citizens.
Since 2021, Lukashenka has orchestrated the 'migration crisis' on the EU border, which is perceived as a “political and hybrid” weapon. Furthermore, since 2022, Lukashenka has been actively involved in providing large-scale military assistance to support Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine.
The EU has imposed a number of restrictive measures against Belarus in response to the ongoing situation in the country and Belarus’ involvement in the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The claims that Poland has engaged in unfriendly actions towards Belarus or harbours aggressive geopolitical plans against the country are unfounded. As a neighbour of Belarus, Poland continues to support the Belarusian people while respecting international law.
