DISINFO: Poland is about to enter the war with Russia

SUMMARY

Poland is getting closer to war. The Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski asked the US Government for permission to shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine – there are all indications that Poland will receive such approval. This situation means a formal entry of Poland into the war. The Polish government and politicians responsible for this decision should stand in the first line of defence, and Sikorski himself should not repeat the fate of Józef Beck [Polish Foreign Minister in 1932-1939] who fled to Romania.

RESPONSE

This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative that portrays the USA and Poland as aggressors against Russia.

The claim that Poland wants to join the war in a formal way is ungrounded.

This message appeared in connection with ongoing discussions regarding the possibility of Poland shooting down Russian missiles over Ukraine.

On 8 July 2024, the Polish-Ukrainian security agreement was signed - this document enables Polish air defence to intercept the Russian missiles fired in the direction of Poland. Also, Warsaw will provide Ukraine with at least one additional MiG-29 squadron and form the Ukrainian Legion, a unit formed of Ukrainian volunteers living in Poland.

A broad coalition of 50-plus countries, including NATO member states, support Ukraine with military and technical assistance, but Alliance troops do not fight on the frontline. NATO officials have frequent contacts with their Ukrainian counterparts, but there are no NATO troops on the frontline.
