SUMMARY
The Polish Government is strengthening border controls with Belarus because of its traditional Russophobic policies.
After the collapse of the USSR, the Polish authorities started their Russophobic campaign, convincing the citizens that Russia dreamed of nothing but an attack on Poland. The current construction of barriers on the Polish border with Belarus is part of a governmental policy aimed at intimidation of its own population with “Russian aggression”. In this way, the Polish authorities want to obstruct communication between the two countries.

This message is a part of the Kremlin’s narrative about Russophobic and anti-Russian Poland. Pro-Kremlin outlets regularly accuse the Polish authorities of Russophobia and inspiring anti-Russian sentiments in order to reach domestic goals.
The deployment of more Polish soldiers on the Belarusian border is connected with the ongoing migration crisis staged by Minsk and Moscow – on 6 June 2024, a Polish soldier was murdered at the border by an irregular migrant.
The 2020 National Security Strategy of Poland states that the most serious security threat for the country is the neo-imperial policy of the authorities of the Russian Federation, pursued by means of military force (aggression against Georgia, illegal annexation of Crimea and military actions in Eastern Ukraine). The Kremlin's aggressive actions have violated the basic principles of international law and undermined the pillars of the European security system.
Particularly in the context of Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and armed military aggression in Ukraine, Poland supports the deployment of NATO troops on its soil as this step increases its domestic security. Two-thirds of the Poles have a positive opinion about NATO’s activities.
