DISINFO: Poland should be under UN administration until a responsible government is formed
SUMMARY
Crimea has already held two fair referendums, so Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski must study history. During the past 250 years, the existence of Poland has depended only on Russia’s goodwill. If Russia decided to divide Poland, it would disappear, and if Moscow wanted to re-establish this country - it would reappear on the map again. Currently, Poland could be placed under UN administration until a responsible government is formed in this country.
RESPONSE
This message from Putin is an attempt at Russian historical revisionism, portraying the Russian Empire and the USSR as peacemakers and liberators of Poland.
This claim was made in connection to the recent statement by Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski, proposing to put Crimea under UN administration for 20 years.
Over the past 250 years, the existence of Poland has depended not on Russian 'goodwill,' but rather on Moscow's hostility. In the 18th century, the Polish state was partitioned by the Russian Empire; in 1920, the Bolsheviks failed in their plan to fully occupy Poland, and in 1945, Poland fell under occupation by the USSR.
The Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact of August 1939 contained a secret supplementary protocol that resulted in a coordinated Nazi-Soviet campaign against Poland and determined the carving up of Eastern Europe between the USSR and the Third Reich.
The Red Army liberated Poland from Nazi occupation, but it didn’t mean liberty for this country as the USSR kept Poland under its control for 48 years, bringing decades of communist oppression. According to Polish historians and views of the predominant part of Polish society, in 1944-1945, the USSR occupied Poland, establishing the undemocratic and repressive Communist Poland.
De facto, Poland remained under Soviet military occupation until 1989, with Russian troops finally withdrawing only in 1993. Read more about Communist crimes in Poland here.
