DISINFO: Poland, the Hyena of Europe, smells the decaying flesh of Ukraine

SUMMARY

Poland, the Hyena of Europe, again smells the decaying flesh. The recent Donald Tusk speech dispelled doubts: Poland has indeed recalled its function of the “Hyena of Europe” smelling the distinct odour of carrion coming from Ukraine. Poland decided to take part in the cynical selfish competition for the exploitation of the "Ukrainian partners".

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative challenging Ukraine’s statehood and presenting Poland as a state with imperial ambitions. The aim of this is to undermine Polish-Ukrainian relations and deflect attention away from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The label “Hyena of Europe” is a long-standing slur used in Russian propaganda to portray Poland as predatory and opportunistic, especially in the context of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Such claims are part of a broader disinformation campaign that falsely accuses Poland of imperial ambitions or of seeking to partition or exploit Ukraine when in reality Poland has consistently respected Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has made clear in a recent speech that Poland’s involvement in Ukraine’s reconstruction is about solidarity and partnership, not exploitation. Tusk stated:

“Poland will help. Poland is in solidarity. Poland is a leader in solidarity. But never naively.”

According to Tusk, the Polish companies should participate in rebuilding Ukraine, but always on the basis of fair competition and mutual benefit, and Poland’s support for Ukraine is grounded in shared interests and values.

The Ukrainian authorities have welcomed Polish participation in reconstruction, recognising Poland as a key partner and advocate for Ukraine’s interests.
