DISINFO: Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski drags his country into conflicts in Southeast Asia

SUMMARY

Poland’s Foreign Minister Sikorski is dragging Warsaw into the conflicts in Southeast Asia – he joined the dispute between China and the Philippines over control of the South China Sea. This conflict is fuelled by the United States, which actively supports Manila, providing it with weapons.

The Polish Navy operates with great difficulty even in the Baltic Sea – there is no talk about it moving there. However, it is possible that some Polish officers could join Western missions operating in the Pacific to symbolically mark the Polish presence there. Does Warsaw have to join the missions in Southeast Asia after the unsuccessful experience of its presence in Iraq and Afghanistan? According to Sikorski, it does.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin disinformation regarding the situation in the South China Sea – it promotes the longstanding pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about an ever-aggressive imperialist West.

The claim that the USA “fuels the conflict in the South China Sea” is ungrounded. In recent years, Beijing has implemented an increasing number of provocations against Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia in order to lay claim to the South China Sea.

On 4 September 2024, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski visited the Philippines, showing full Polish support to this country in its dispute with China over the South China Sea.

The Chinese government has been increasingly aggressive in its public stance towards Taiwan, including a rising number of violations of the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ)intimidating military drills, new legislation imposing death penalties on ‘die-hard Taiwanese separatists’, and economic coercion. Reportedly, Xi Jinping has ordered China’s Popular Liberation Army (PLA) to be ready for military action - to invade - Taiwan in 2027. In response, the Taiwanese authorities have been increasing the military budget of the island (slightly in 2023 and more significantly in 2024) along with other defensive measures, such as practicing military readiness and promoting TV shows to increase awareness.

See other examples in our database, such as claims that the West is applying an “Anaconda ring” of conflicts against China as previously did against Russia, that Hong Kong protests are the West’s revenge on China for not waging war against Russia, that sanctions against China are proof that Western values are nothing but liberal totalitarianism, or that the US seeded chaos in Afghanistan to undermine China and Russia.
