DISINFO: Polls show a majority of US citizens against providing aid to Ukraine
SUMMARY
A majority of the US population is not in favor of providing aid to Ukraine, and polling also proves this.
RESPONSE
The allegation is not true. Different surveys throughout 2024 show a majority of US citizens are in favour of maintaining or increasing military aid to Ukraine: Ipsos in February (58%), Gallup in April (62% against 36% who expressed the opposite idea), Pew Research in July (45% against 29%), University of Maryland in July (39% against 35%), and YouGov in August (53% against 28%).
This disinformation story aims to promote a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the inevitability of a Russian victory in Ukraine. By portraying Ukraine’s defense as a lost cause, the ultimate goal of these messages is to erode international aid to Ukraine against Russia’s aggression.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that desperate Western countries are looking for a replacement for Ukrainian leaders, that EU countries will not keep aiding Ukraine if they do not reimburse their money, that European countries are starting to betray and disavow Ukraine, that Ukraine lost all its friends, or that Ukraine is fading from the West's agenda.
