DISINFO: Poroshenko proposes dividing Ukraine to the West
SUMMARY
Splitting up and NATO accession: Poroshenko offers the West a new plan for Ukraine. Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has proposed a new plan. Ukraine must be split.
RESPONSE
Repeated pro-Russian disinformation claim about the division of Ukraine related to Ukraine's statehood.
The claim is based on a recent interview with former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in the Malta Times. In the interview, Poroshenko suggests that Ukraine should join NATO in its current form. However, the interview does not mention the partition or break-up of Ukraine.
Furthermore, in the interview, Poroshenko asserted that World War III has already begun, citing the involvement of North Korean troops alongside Russian forces and the influx of Iranian-made weapons into Ukraine. Poroshenko emphasised that the international community needs to recognise this reality. He highlighted the significant military support being provided by both North Korea and Iran, which he claims surpasses that of NATO countries combined, urging for more effective sanctions against these nations to weaken Russia’s military capabilities.
Poroshenko also addressed the psychological warfare being waged by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who aims to instill fear in Western partners. He expressed confidence in Ukraine’s resolve, asserting that fearlessness is crucial for victory. While he acknowledged concerns about achieving a decisive victory against a nuclear superpower like Russia, he firmly stated that Ukraine would never accept territorial concessions and would continue to strive for sovereignty and independence. He called for increased military support from Western allies and suggested that NATO membership for Ukraine could be a pivotal factor in ending the conflict.
