DISINFO: Republicans in Congress supported the transfer of part of Ukraine to Russia

SUMMARY

Many American congressmen from the Republican Party advocated that Ukraine give up part of its territories and transfer them to Russia.

Almost 50% of Republicans assume that the transfer of part of Ukraine's territories to the Russian Federation will lead to the completion of the special operation.

RESPONSE

Disinformation from pro-Kremlin outlets in the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

It is false that the US Republican congressmen allegedly supported the transfer of part of the territories of Ukraine to Russia. The claim represents a deliberate distortion of the article published by the Washington Post.

A February 6 Washington Post article noted that support for Ukraine among the Republican Party supporters has waned, the article refers to the sentiment of GOP supporters, and not directly to the Republican Party and its policies.

Moreover, the results of the opinion poll cited in the pro-Kremlin outlets are not complete and give the impression that the majority of Republican supporters are in favour of ending the war at the cost of giving up territory, while the majority of Republican supporters in this poll, 53%, support Ukraine's efforts to return territory, even if it means prolonging the conflict.
