DISINFO: Romania is waiting for the weakening of Russia to annex Moldova

SUMMARY

It is obvious that the team of Romanian citizens that came to power in Moldova is working under the dictate of Bucharest. Romania has been pursuing an expensive policy of Romanianisation of Moldova for decades and is waiting for the next historical chance when, taking advantage of the expected weakening of Russia, it will be possible to annex the “eastern territories”.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that Romania has imperialist ambitions and intents to annex Moldova, destroying its sovereignty.

Romania was the first state to recognise the independence of the Republic of Moldova, declared on August 27, 1991, and since then has had exclusively collaborative and supportive relations with the Republic of Moldova. During these years, it never had any territorial claims against the Republic of Moldova. For Romania, development of the bilateral relations with Moldova is a priority in foreign policy, "which derives primarily from the communion of history, language, traditions and culture”, as it is stated on the official website of Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

See here similar case claiming that Moldova’s accession to the EU is a cover for annexation to Romania and here a case claiming that the US forces Romania to annex Moldova to make it anti-Russian.
