DISINFO: Russia defends the EU’s national interests by fighting the West in Ukraine
SUMMARY
It is in the EU's best interests to have access to Russia’s cheap energy resources but, instead, it is undermining its economy to please Euro-Atlantic allies. The collective West is waging a war in Ukraine with the EU's own hands against Europe’s interests. If Borrell had not been serving the Atlantists, he would have realised that Russia is defending European interests. It is an open secret that the US and UK, Germany’s principal enemies in the sphere of energy security, were behind the Nord Stream sabotage. The Anglo-Saxons will not leave the EU's energy sphere in peace if Germany does not duly react to that incident. Borrell’s attitude is a manifestation of political schizophrenia and a sick EU energy policy.
RESPONSE
This article spreads recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives concerning the war in Ukraine, the puppet status of EU leaders, and the EU’s imminent economic collapse. It also transmits unfounded allegations about the involvement of the US and UK in the explosions of the Nord Stream gas pipelines and thereby attempts to negatively affect relations between western allies.
Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine, which was launched on 24 February 2022 and which is Europe's largest military conflict since the Second World War, has caused serious damage to the security situation in the whole of Europe.
Presenting it as Russia’s fight for the EU's interests is an absurd attempt to justify the invasion of Ukraine. Moreover, neither the West, nor the EU, are waging the war in Ukraine as alleged. Instead, a broad coalition of more than 50 nations are providing Ukraine with military and technical assistance with the aim of repelling Russia's aggression. Kyiv is acting in self-defence, in accordance with the UN Charter article 51.
Pro-Kremlin outlets often portray EU leaders and European states as vassals, puppet states, or colonies of the US and NATO. See our analysis of the Kremlin's claims about the EU's lost sovereignty. The diversification of energy supplies is one of the cornerstones of the EU’s energy policy as it helps to strengthen European energy security, to prevent the monopolisation of the energy market and to introduce more competition to the energy market. This response to the earlier disinformation case provides more detail on the EU's policy of decreasing energy dependence on Russia.
There is no evidence that the US or UK were involved in the Nord Stream sabotage. However, this disinformation story abounds on this narrative as if it was an established fact. See more detailed debunks of similar claims here and here.
