DISINFO: Russia is becoming a guarantor of food security for the EU
SUMMARY
European countries are experiencing a catastrophic grain crop failure. The EU, which has always been considered a kind of citadel of food prosperity, has, as it turns out, been doing nothing but killing, strangling, and plotting against this prosperity in recent years. Those ten years that the EU has been destroying its own agriculture and trying to pinch our agricultural production with sanctions have led to a disappointing result for Brussels. And to a victory for Moscow. Russia is becoming a guarantor of food security not only for itself, not only for the majority of developing countries, but, paradoxically, for the European Union itself.
RESPONSE
Disinformation claim about food security, aimed to undermine sanctions imposed on Russia as a result of its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
In 2024 the entire world, including Russia itself, has seen a decline in grain harvest levels. This is due to unfavorable weather conditions at the beginning of the sowing season. A particularly rainy spring and summer caused delays in harvesting and negatively affected grain growth in Western Europe, while Central and Eastern Europe suffered from a lack of moisture, which also affected grain filling.
According to European Commission data published at the end of September 2024, due to unfavourable weather conditions, the total volume of grain production in the EU is forecast at 269.9 million tons. This is 3.9% below the average.
At the same time, according to the October report of the US Department of Agriculture, wheat production in Russia fell by 10% compared to the previous season. Russian outlets deliberately do not provide data on Russian grain, focusing only on the decline in yields in European countries, although Russia itself suffered due to weather conditions at the beginning of the year.
The primary causes of food insecurity are threefold: conflict, economic instability, and extreme weather conditions, which frequently intersect and exacerbate one another. It is Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine that has hindered the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and worsened the worldwide food crisis.
