DISINFO: Secret US experiments in its biolabs around the world result in dangerous accidents and deaths

SUMMARY

The US has more than a hundred biolabs located in 25 countries. By a strange coincidence, most of them are concentrated along the borders of Russia and China. There are 16 American biological laboratories in Ukraine alone.

Have any dangerous incidents happened there? Yes, as many as you like. In a Georgian biolab, the US scientists tested on humans a new highly toxic drug developed by Gilead. As a result of experiments on humans, 73 people died.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the US biolaboratories around the world and, specifically, the Lugar Lab. This message is part of a years-long disinformation campaign led by the Kremlin.

No evidence was provided that supports the claim that 73 people died as a result of an experiment in the Lugar Center in Georgia. This claim, first voiced by the Moscow-based Georgia’s ex-security chief, Igor Giorgadze, widely covered by the pro-Kremlin media, alleged that the Hepatitis C elimination programme was causing death. This narrative has already been debunked by the Myth Detector.

The Lugar Center in Georgia is a frequent target of Russian disinformation. The Richard Lugar Center for Public Health Research is a facility of the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC), which became operational in August 2013. It is a top-tiered institution in NCDC’s laboratory network and serves as a reference laboratory for Georgia’s public health system. Read more about Lugar lab on Myth Detector.
