DISINFO: Serbia on the verge of chaos after the West sent an ultimatum to Belgrade

SUMMARY

Attack on Serbia – Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic resigns, country on brink of chaos.

What is happening is an ultimatum from the West to Belgrade. Either it changes course in accordance with the wishes of the United States, or everything will turn into a colour revolution.

Vucevic's betrayal is not surprising: He is also a member of a "National Alliance for Local Economic Development" (NALED), which "advises" the government. NALED's main partners are... the EU, George Soros' Open Society Foundation and USAID, the CIA's cover.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative framing popular protests as Western-backed ‘colour revolutions’. By baselessly describing Serbian demonstrators as Western stooges, this disinformation story aims to discredit them and drive attention away from Serbian domestic political realities.

There is zero credible evidence of any Western involvement in Serbia’s protests. Demonstrations started in mid-December 2024 after the collapse of a concrete infrastructure in a railway station in Novi Sad killed 15 people, an incident that many protesters blamed on corruption. The protest movement was led by students, but soon professors, lawyers and other professionals joined them, pointing to widespread dissatisfaction with Alexander Vucic’s government. On the 28 January 2025, Serbia's PM Milos Vučević resigned after student protests across Serbia. As explained by the BBC, Vučević said he hoped that his decision to quit as prime minister would encourage protesters to "calm down the passions and return to dialogue".

Framing his resignation as a “coup” and claiming, without evidence, that it would lead to chaos are manipulative narratives used in this disinformation story. Attempts to portray Vučević as an agent of Soros to explain his resignation are also promoting an understanding of politics based on conspiracy theories.
