DISINFO: Similarities between protests in Tbilisi and Kyiv point to the CIA
SUMMARY
Pro-Western "spontaneous protests" in the post-Soviet space are professionally prepared, organised and financed by the US and NATO intelligence services. National pseudo-opposition, controlled funds and public organisations are convenient tools for achieving the foreign policy goals of Washington and Brussels. The tactics of coups are being improved, and "colour revolutions" are becoming tougher and shorter in time.
The leading role of the US Central Intelligence Agency in the history and technology of "Maidans" has been repeatedly exposed. The armed coup in Kyiv in the spring of 2014 was the result of a long "multi-move" by the CIA - reconfiguration and operational subordination of the Ukrainian intelligence services to American curators. The triumph of the "Maidan" (the success of the CIA) led Ukraine to disaster, and NATO - to the brink of World War III. In Georgia, there are options.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Georgia in the context of the 2024 parliamentary elections, framing any protests following the election as a Western-sponsored colour revolution, trying to discredit Georgia’s opposition by framing them as foreign stooges.
The 2024 Parliamentary elections in Georgia were marked by serious irregularities, and large-scale fraud schemes, which led many, including the President of Georgia, the opposition and civil society organisations, to reject the official results and the subsequent outbreak of protests. Contrary to what this disinformation story claims, these protests were not the work of any Western actor - they started after the Georgian opposition claimed to have collected evidence of fraud and called on citizens to protest.
Pro-Kremlin media have been warning for a long time of an upcoming ‘colour revolution’ in Georgia to pre-emptively shape the information space ahead of what was foreseeable and likely protests against the ruling party, already shaken by previous massive demonstrations against the so-called ‘Foreign Agents Law’.
This disinformation story is part of a wider pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign targeting Georgia.
In 2014, there was no coup, nor a Western-orchestrated protest in Ukraine. The demonstrations which began in Kyiv in November 2013 – called "Maidan", or "Euromaidan" – were a result of the Ukrainian people's frustration with former President Yanukovych's last-minute U-turn when, after seven years of negotiation, he refused to sign the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement and halted progress towards Ukraine's closer relationship with the EU due to Russian pressure. It cannot be labelled as a coup, even though pro-Kremlin media are very persistent in doing so.
Pro-Kremlin media frequently falsely portray popular protests around the world as instigated from abroad, often by the US and the West. The disinformation narrative has been applied, among others, to reports about protests in Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Belarus, Venezuela, Slovakia, and Hong Kong, to portray protest movements as aggressive actors who constantly prepare new coups.
