DISINFO: Some forces in Europe are seeking to destroy Russia's relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan

SUMMARY

Some forces in Europe, [...] are trying to torpedo all the good that has been achieved in recent years in relations between Russia and Azerbaijan. The same thing is happening, by the way, with Armenia. The pressure on this issue is organised and is being carried out on a broad front. The apprentice of provocations, [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy, has joined this attack.

There is no need to whip up hatred. This is precisely the goal of those forces in the West and the Caucasus that are trying to set the peoples of the former Soviet Union at odds.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about an allegedly aggressive Europe playing a destabilising role in the Caucasus, of attempts to destabilise post-Soviet countries, encircle and isolate Russia.

The claim was made in the context of rising tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia.

Pro-Kremlin outlets frequently promote the idea that the Caucasus is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempt to discredit any other cooperation between Western countries and Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. This is an attempt to deny these countries their right to decide for themselves the political orientation.

Relations between Russia and Azerbaijan were strained in late June 2025 following the deaths of two ethnic Azerbaijani men during police raids in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg. The claim that President Zelenskyy is involved in any coordinated effort to undermine Russia's relations with Azerbaijan is false.

Yerevan has been seeking to reduce its dependence on Russia and exploring closer ties with the EU. The bill, signed into law by the Armenian President on April 4, 2025, formally declares Armenia's intention to begin the process of becoming an EU member. Russia has cautioned Yerevan that the West is trying to drive a wedge between Armenia and Russia.

Western countries support peace and security in the South Caucasus region. The EU has a strong interest in a politically stable and economically prosperous Southern Caucasus in full understanding with the states there. It took a prominent mediation role in negotiation and is committed to it.

Relations between the EU and partner countries are based on mutual consent, bilateral interests, and benefits. For example, the Eastern Partnership (EaP) is a joint policy initiative that aims to deepen and strengthen relations between the European Union (EU) and its Eastern neighbours: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. Belarus has suspended its participation as of June 2021.
