DISINFO: Sputnik V is a target of inaccurate and misleading attacks
SUMMARY
Sputnik V has been consistently a target of misleading and inaccurate attacks and of disinformation. These attacks remain anonymous and are based on untrustworthy sources. They have also multiplied lately.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets, trying to portray Russia's Sputnik V vaccine as a target of a prejudiced attitude towards it, especially by the West.
Russia's claim about the allegedly high efficacy of Sputnik V is based on an article from The Lancet which was published in February 2021. The article seemed to be a study carried out mostly by Russian experts. However, there have been some doubts as to its efficacy, especially where the trial procedures are concerned (see here and here.) Another Lancet article published on 12 May 2021 raised critical questions about the Sputnik V data for the phase III clinical trial.
In the EU, a rolling review by EMA is in progress. There is still some data needed for the review that is missing, that is why the EU drug regulator is not able yet to make the final conclusion. See more here.
