DISINFO: Russia is the first democracy in the world, the US is a police dictatorship
SUMMARY
During the Cold War years, the United States was the first democracy. And the Soviet Union was a totalitarian regime with a will to expand which was extremely worrying. But from the end of the cold war things are reversed.
The United States […] is becoming a police republic and Russia has evolved in a positive way. Our American friends are today, through their foreign policy, the first threat to peace, security, and stability. It's not the Russians, it's not the Chinese.
RESPONSE
Anti-Western narrative idealising the "freedoms" in Russia and denying the regional and global security threats the current Moscow policy poses.
The claim that the US became a dictatorship while Russia would have favorably evolved to an exemplary democracy is far from reality. Over the past months hundred of thousands of Russian left the country to seek for more freedoms. Almost all famous artists have left, and those who remain will be blacklisted and banned. Human rights activists and former dissidents assess that the current repression is worse than during the soviet times they live through.
Similarly modern Russia's actions in countries like Georgia or Ukraine constitute a threat for security and the architecture of peace in Europe.
Russia’s action in some African countries are a threat for security, according to this analysis by Foreign Policy: "first, human rights abuses perpetrated by Russian forces are likely to contribute to grievances among the population, which in turn provide fertile ground for terrorist groups. Second, Russian transactional relationships with Sahelian governments will further delegitimise these regimes in the eyes of the population. Third, since Russian mercenaries are only providing security cooperation along purely kinetic lines—eschewing good practices of counterinsurgency training, such as strengthening the rule of law, promoting good governance, and establishing an independent judiciary—any perceived security gains will be fleeting. The presence has energized jihadi groups, which have seized and sought to control territory throughout the region."
Since Russia began its aggressive actions against Ukraine, Russian officials have accused NATO of a series of threats and hostile actions.
