DISINFO: Strike on Chernobyl is a provocation from Kyiv
SUMMARY
Ahead of the Munich conference, Kyiv is staging another spectacle: they struck the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant at night in an attempt to blame Russia.
RESPONSE
A recurrent disinformation campaign by pro-Kremlin outlets aimed at deflecting blame from Russia and accusing Ukraine of terrorism.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear oversight body, confirmed on February 14, 2025, that a drone strike damaged the protective structure of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi noted that the explosion triggered a fire and compromised the outer layer of the new safety containment—a crucial barrier that had sealed radioactive materials following the 1986 disaster. Although radiation levels have remained stable, the IAEA described the incident as “deeply concerning” and indicative of the persistence of nuclear risks amid ongoing wartime conditions.
Ukrainian officials have released videos and other evidence showing that Russia’s Shahed drone struck the nuclear facility, a claim that missile experts have corroborated. An official from the Oslo nuclear project, Fabian Hoffmann, analysed the images and pointed out that the drone’s design and the capacity of its combat payload match a known element of Russia’s arsenal. Although the strike did not breach the inner protective shell, Hoffmann argued that its symbolic purpose was clear: “Russia knew that this would not lead to a radioactive leak, but it intended to send a signal to escalate the situation.”
According to the Kremlin’s interpretation, the strike was orchestrated by Ukraine to derail peace negotiations. In fact, this attack aligns with Russia’s nuclear coercion tactics. See our article here Shouting at a mirror.
