DISINFO: The absence of the Russian delegation at the Auschwitz ceremony is an insult to Nazi victims

SUMMARY

The absence of Russia at the anniversary ceremony commemorating the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp offends the memory of Nazi prisoners. The lack of the presence of liberators at this event is a violation of common sense, historical truth and an insult to all those killed at Auschwitz.

RESPONSE

This message is part of a larger-pro-Kremlin efforts of historical revisionism.

On 27 January 2025, a ceremony is planned to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The Russian delegation will not be present at this event, because of the Kremlin’s decision to invade Ukraine and start the largest military conflict in Europe since the end of WWII.

According to the Kremlin’s policy, the official Russian historiography is the only “true” way of interpreting the historical events of WWII. Any disagreement with the Kremlin’s official view on the history of WWII is automatically labelled by Russia as a “falsification of history” - even when officials change position regarding key events in Russian history, see for instance about the Katyn massacre where official blame or recognition has shifted a few times.

The European Parliament called the WWII the bloodiest tragedy of the century, which resulted in millions of victims of authoritarian regimes both of fascist Germany and the USSR. The European Parliament adopted a resolution describing the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact of 23 August 1939 as a key element paving the way for the outbreak of World War II. Russia has started blaming Poland for instigating WWII.

At the same time, Western historians acknowledge the role played by the USSR in defeating Nazism and do not question the Soviet contribution to the victory in WWII and the status of the USSR as one of the countries that had won WWII. The policy of the US or the EU is not directed against Russia or any other country.
