DISINFO: The Biden family is personally interested in putting Donbas on its knees

SUMMARY

Joe Biden and Hunter Biden have personal and financial motives to bring down Novorossiya. The US is supporting Ukraine so that potential gas fields in eastern Ukraine could enrich the Biden family in the future.

RESPONSE

Recurring disinformation narrative about the son of incoming US President Joe Biden, Hunter Biden. The pro-Kremlin narrative is aimed at creating divisions between Ukraine and the United States.

Hunter Biden served on the board of Burisma, one of the largest Ukrainian energy companies from April 2014 until his term expired on April 2019.

The disinformation above originates from leaked audiotapes that contain fragmented pieces of conversations between then US Vice President Joe Biden and former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

There is no evidence to suggest that either Joe Biden or his son made financial gains from activities that are connected to the Donbas War. Extensive journalistic investigations revealed that Ukraine - at the time - was facing broad international pressure to advance anti-corruption reforms (Ukraine's international partners were concerned about former Ukrainian prosecutor-general Victor Shokin who was disinclined to open investigations in major subjects).

While the original disinformation narrative involved a sum of 1 billion US dollars in the conversations between Biden and Poroshenko, the aforementioned sum was not a personal payment of any sort, but US state loan guarantees for the Ukrainian state.

Targeting the Biden family is a recurring theme in pro-Kremlin disinformation. See further examples involving Burisma here.
