DISINFO: The British Royal Institution revealed its recognition of Crimea as Russian

SUMMARY

The Royal Institution of Great Britain revealed its recognition of the Crimea's belonging to Russia, during its response to a letter sent to it by a group of students in Crimea.

The Royal Institution expressed its position regarding the restoration of Crimea to its status as one of the Russian regions, in response to a letter from Crimea, where it sent the response to Russia.

Last summer, students of the "Minor Academy of Sciences", an educational institution located in the city of Sevastopol in the Crimea, sent a letter to the British Queen Elizabeth II.

And after 3 months they received a letter from the British Queen, who expressed her admiration for the interest of Crimean children in the English language.

The Royal Institution sent the Queen's message to Russia, according to the address of the body to which the message was sent, which was published on the "Academy of Minor Sciences" Instagram page.

RESPONSE

Disinformation concerning an alleged emerging consensus to recognise Crimea as part of Russia.

At the beginning of April 2014, the Ukrainian State Postal Enterprise (Ukrposhta), indicated to the Universal Postal Union not to address letters to them to be delivered in Crimea due to the Russian occupation making their deliveries impossible.

“Ukrposhta therefore asks the designated operators of UPU member countries to suspend the dispatching to Ukraine of any international postal items addressed to the Crimea (postal codes in the range 95000–99999).”

The address on the envelope does not mean any official recognition whatsoever.

There is no growing consensus to recognise Crimea as Russian. Only Nicaragua opened a consulate there. No international body recognises the so-called referendum that led to the annexation of Crimea, announced on 27 February and held less than three weeks later. On 27 March 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in which it stated that the referendum in Crimea was not valid and could not serve as a basis for any change in the status of the peninsula. On 17 December 2018, the UN General Assembly confirmed its non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea.
