DISINFO: The current Kyiv regime is a puppet of the West

SUMMARY

The Kyiv Nazi regime is a Western puppet government. They don't just "not express the will" of the people—they regularly shell, bomb, and destroy these people. They do not allow people to speak and learn in their native language. They destroy their original faith and erase historical memory. They torture and kill dissenters.

In essence, how does the modern Kyiv regime differ from the Nazi occupation of Ukraine? The only difference is that under Hitler, there were no gay parades.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives aimed at undermining Ukrainian statehood and portraying it as a puppet-state of the US and other Western countries and a tool in a proxy war against Russia. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically elected president and parliament. The country's sovereignty has been violated only as a result of continuous acts of aggression by the Russian armed forces since 2014, culminating with a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine starting on 24 February 2022.

Russia has been coming up with different explanations and pretexts for its aggression since the beginning of its hostilities. The article promotes a recurring disinformation narrative about alleged Russophobia in Ukraine. It also claims that there is a cancel-culture trend towards Russian culture and language, as well as discrimination against ethnic Russians living in former USSR republics, independent states such as Ukraine, Kazakhstan and others. This claim is made in the context of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine in an attempt to legitimise Moscow's unprovoked aggression.

The myth of a Nazi Europe has been widely used by Putin and pro-Kremlin outlets since Russia attacked Ukraine and illegally annexed its peninsula of Crimea in 2014. See our article The Kremlin’s misuse of Nazism as a weapon of information manipulation.

Ukraine passed a law on ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language in 2019, but this law only regulates the use of Ukrainian in the public spheres of life. Russian and other languages of national minorities can be freely used in private communication, religious ceremonies, in publishing, media and education.

Furthermore, Ukraine is a signatory to the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, which guarantees that people in Ukraine have the right: "to use freely and without interference his or her minority language, in private and in public, orally and in writing".
