DISINFO: Deep State with Victoria Nuland was the driving force behind regime overthrow in Ukraine
SUMMARY
More practical substance for the world outside the USA might be the question, who will be the foreign policy and security adviser in the new administration. The direct intersections with the “deep state”, oh pardon, that is, of course, an invention of malicious tongues. Let’s say the oligarchy, the corporations and the networks of influence.
But if the “Deep State” existed, the already mentioned Victoria Nuland would be a deep state person, like in a storybook […] Ms. Nuland was in fact the driving force behind the regime overthrow in Ukraine rather than her head of state, Obama. Her personal imprint was more prominent.
RESPONSE
The claim that Ms. Nuland is one of the organisers of Euromaidan in 2014 in Ukraine is a part of a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative that claims that protests were organised by foreign forces.
In this case, the narrative with Ms. Nuland is adapted to the "Deep State" theory, which states that there won’t be any change in US foreign policy whoever wins the US election. This claim matches a well-established pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about global elites secretly ruling the world, and specifically a so-called "Deep State" in the United States. This narrative aims to question the legitimacy of democracy and Western institutions in general.
The protests in Ukraine were not organised by foreign forces. The spontaneous onset of the Euromaidan was an organic reaction by numerous parts of the Ukrainian population to former President Yanukovych’s sudden departure from the promised Association Agreement with the European Union in November 2013. The protesters' demands included constitutional reform, a stronger role for parliament, formation of a government of national unity, an end to corruption, early presidential elections and an end to violence as can be read here.
The West did not interfere in Ukraine in 2014. Ukraine is a sovereign state. Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected by almost the whole world, including the EU. The EU and the US work closely with Ukraine and support the democratic development of Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter’s principles of non-interference into internal affairs and respect towards territorial integrity and political independence.
The claim that the US was behind the Euromaidan protests is also a recurring disinformation narrative.
