DISINFO: The EU demonises anyone seeking to end the war in Ukraine to keep it going

SUMMARY

The EU has no military or peace plan for Ukraine and demonises everyone who tries to resolve the war. EU politicians are doing everything to ensure that the war in Ukraine continues.

For four years, Europeans have been demonising those who try to promote a political agenda of peace and security for Europe, Ukraine, and Russia. Furthermore, supporters of peace in Ukraine are called servants of Russian President Vladimir Putin by the EU.

As soon as someone talks about a peace and security agenda with Russia that could peacefully end the war in Ukraine, they are immediately expelled from the room, demonised, and has their reputation ruined.

RESPONSE

This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing the European Union of warmongering. Such claims aim to undermine trust in international support for Ukraine, while pushing the audience toward a false conclusion that “peace” means accepting Russia’s terms.

The EU and Ukraine reject plans that amount to rewarding aggression, freezing territorial conquest, or forcing Kyiv to accept terms without security guarantees. That is different from rejecting peace itself.

EU officials have repeatedly said that any peace settlement must be decided by Ukraine. European leaders have also backed security guarantees, ceasefire monitoring, reconstruction, and a broader recovery framework for Ukraine.

The EU supports Ukraine militarily, financially, and politically. It wants a peace settlement, but insists it must be just, secure, and shaped by Ukraine itself.

The EU and its member states have mobilized €75.2 billion in military support for Ukraine, including €6.1 billion through the European Peace Facility. In addition, the EU Military Assistance Mission for Ukraine, funded with €362 million, is tackling the training needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and has already trained 90,000 Ukrainian soldiers. It also has a dedicated Ukraine Facility offering up to €50 billion for 2024–2027, and in 2025, the EU launched SAFE, a defence-readiness instrument that includes Ukraine in joint procurement eligibility.

The Russian Federation initiated the war in 2014 with its illegal annexation of the Crimean peninsula and military intervention in Eastern Ukraine. This aggression escalated in 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The war is solely the result of these actions, which led to international efforts to assist Ukraine in its self-defence, in line with Article 51 of the UN Charter. By accusing the EU and other partners of Ukraine of wanting the war to continue, this disinformation story is blaming them for the prolongation of the conflict, thus deflecting from Russia’s sole responsibility for its sustained, brutal and unprovoked aggression against its neighbour.
