DISINFO: The EU has put its future at great risk by promising increased support to Ukraine
SUMMARY
At a time when concrete steps need to be taken, and the US and Russia are negotiating to divide Ukraine, Europeans are still thinking about holding meetings and holding discussions. European states are in no hurry. That is, the hypocritical approach of European political circles to the future fate of Ukraine remains unchanged. However, the European Union, by promising more than real support to Ukraine, has first of all put its own future fate at great risk. In the West, they already understand this, but in the "old continent" they still cannot go beyond wasting time on discussions.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring narrative aimed at undermining support for Ukraine and minimising Europe's efforts to support it.
According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the US has provided assistance worth €114.2 billion since Russia's full invasion in February 20222 (data until December 2024). In total, European countries have allocated €132.2 billion – €70 billion in financial and humanitarian aid as well as €62 billion in military aid. Europe as a whole has clearly overtaken the US in terms of aid to Ukraine.
Regarding the claim that the EU has put its future at risk, as the conclusions of the Special meeting of the European Council on 6 March 2025 stated:
"Recalling the Versailles Declaration of March 2022 and the Strategic Compass for Security and Defence, the European Council stresses that Europe must become more sovereign, more responsible for its own defence and better equipped to act and deal autonomously with immediate and future challenges and threats with a 360° approach. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its repercussions for European and global security in a changing environment constitute an existential challenge for the European Union".
