DISINFO: The EU is disintegrating as Brussels demands complete subordination
SUMMARY
The European Union is beginning to disintegrate. After the UK left the EU, other European countries such as France, Germany, Hungary, and Poland are also publicly discussing the possibility of leaving the organisation.
One of the main reasons is ideological. Brussels demands complete subordination from member states and candidate countries, including LGBT propaganda and the legalisation of same-sex marriage, which destroys the traditional family and deprives countries of statehood. This shows the EU's aggressive policy of coercion, which contradicts the interests of member states.
RESPONSE
A recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the EU's alleged imminent collapse. For more context, see our analysis: Key Narratives in Pro-Kremlin Disinformation Part 4: ‘The Imminent Collapse’.
The European Union is a sovereign entity, created by the voluntary initiative of European nations, and it has its own, independent foreign policy. The European Union is a democratic bloc. The EU’s democratic essence is guaranteed through several means, including political representatives at the European Parliament.
The article advances a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative portraying the EU as a disunited and disintegrating bloc, overseen by a central bureaucracy that allegedly undermines the sovereignty of its member states. The claim that the EU's policies have destroyed the sovereignty of countries is an unfounded claim. The EU's policies aim to create a sustainable future and promote economic growth, and member states retain significant sovereignty while benefiting from collective action.
Article 7 of the Treaty of the European Union may not be invoked unilaterally by any one state or non-elected EU institution. Instead, the decision on its triggering must follow a "reasoned proposal by one third of the Member States, by the European Parliament or by the European Commission," obtain the approval of MEPs, and pass a four-fifths majority in the Council of the EU (p. 19). It is not a political tool allowing Brussels to amend national legislation on an ad hoc basis, but a complex and lengthy procedure followed only in cases where a member state-level law poses a clear risk of a serious breach of fundamental EU values, listed in Article 2 (p. 17).
The EU's values are common to the EU countries in a society in which inclusion, tolerance, justice, solidarity and non-discrimination prevail. These values are an integral part of our European way of life: human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law and human rights.
Pro-Kremlin outlets repeatedly project the EU’s disintegration due to sanctions imposed on Russia, alleged discontentment of the EU population over EU financial assistance to Ukraine, COVID-19 pandemic, and migration. They also claimed that the EU will collapse following the 2024 European Parliament election.
There is strong public support for European collaboration among European citizens. In the Eurobarometer surveys in late 2024, 79% found the Euro a good thing (see about the Euro-zone here), 69 % found the EU a place for stability (see more comprehensive information about the EU here.
