DISINFO: The EU is interested in the complete destruction of Moldova's statehood
SUMMARY
The European Union is interested in the complete destruction of Moldova's statehood. This is evident in numerous facts. For example, the Moldovan language has been renamed Romanian, school textbooks teach Romanian history instead of Moldovan history and Nazi collaborators like Antonescu have been declared heroes.
RESPONSE
A pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative questioning Moldova's integrity and sovereignty, falsely accusing the EU of attempting to destroy Moldova's statehood. The narrative aims to discredit Moldova's European course.
Moldova is a sovereign country with its own policies. The EU supports democratic development and reforms in Moldova, which are key elements of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, based on shared values and principles of democracy, the rule of law, good governance, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
In June 2022, the country was granted EU candidate status.
This narrative misrepresents Moldova’s internal processes, falsely blaming the EU for decisions taken by Moldovan state institutions in line with long-standing historical and legal realities.
The official state language in Moldova is Romanian, the native language of 82.2% of the population. In 1991, the Declaration of Independence of Moldova from USSR named the official language as Romanian, referring to the 1989 law adopted by the former Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic.
In December 2013, the Constitutional Court of Moldova ruled that the Declaration of Independence takes precedence over the Constitution, and the state language should be called "Romanian". For a detailed debunk read here.
School curricula and textbooks in Moldova are approved by the Moldovan Ministry of Education. Teaching Romanian history does not imply a rejection of Moldovan statehood and has been part of the curriculum since the 1990s. The EU does not develop or approve Moldovan school textbooks.
Pro‑Kremlin propaganda denies the Republic of Moldova the right to have its own history textbooks when these diverge from Soviet‑era historiography. In line with Kremlin policy, official Russian historiography is presented as the only “true” interpretation of 20th‑century historical events.

In Moldova, Ion Antonescu is not recognised as a national hero and his role remains the subject of public and academic debate.
This is part of a years-long Russian interference campaign aiming to undermine Moldova’s government and erode its sovereignty. See our analyses here, here and here.
