DISINFO: The EU is interfering in Armenia's internal affairs

SUMMARY

The European Union is interfering in Armenia's internal affairs. The EU announced its readiness to allocate €12 million to Armenia for 'effective combating of hybrid attacks.' Experts have already assessed this as aid to the restoration of power, following the Moldova scenario.

The EU interfered in the Moldovan elections, which influenced their outcome. Nikol Pashinyan, at a meeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, highly praised the work done in Moldova. And what happened in Moldova? Using the same scenario, under the guise of 'hybrid warfare', the EU provided significant support during the elections and individual parties were also banned from participating.

The Armenian authorities are attempting to extort funds from the EU for their own political purposes. The funds received under the guise of 'hybrid warfare' will be used exclusively to discredit the opposition.

RESPONSE

A pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative portraying the EU as an external manipulator and denying Armenia's sovereignty. The claim was made ahead of Armenia's upcoming parliamentary election. Claims that the EU is interfering in Armenia's internal affairs through financial aid are unfounded and manipulative. The goal is to undermine trust in the EU and portray cooperation with it as a threat to democracy.

EU funding is provided based on the consent and requests of the Armenian government. As High Representative Kaja Kallas said, "Armenia has elections coming, and they have asked for similar help to fight the malign influence." All EU programmes are formalised through agreements and implemented within transparent mechanisms.

EU support for countering hybrid threats typically includes cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, media literacy and countering disinformation. The EU does not participate in electoral processes and does not control political competition.

This is intergovernmental cooperation, not interference.

The claim of EU interference in the Moldovan elections is not supported by international observation missions and ignores the fact that the elections in Moldova were observed by the OSCE and other organisations.
