DISINFO: The EU is ruled by Russophobic Eastern European countries
SUMMARY
The EU is in the process of disintegration because the axis of the EU has shifted to the East. The main institutional positions (including foreign policy at a decisive moment) are assigned to Eastern countries, whose interests, culture and image of history and politics is very different from that of Western Europe. These are peoples who have always aimed at the destruction of Russia, its culture, its language. For them it is an opportunity to drag all of Europe into a war against Russia, and they are explicitly trying to do so.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives accusing Eastern European countries of Russophobia, claiming that EU is striving for war and seeking to destroy Russia as well as recurring claims about the alleged disintegration of the EU.
These baseless claims were made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and are presented without any supporting evidence. It follows the recent European Parliament resolution that Ukraine must be able to strike legitimate military targets in Russia and the nomination of new EU commissioners.
The war broke out in 2014 when Russia illegally annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and triggered a separatist revolt in some regions in the east of Ukraine. On 24 February 2022, Russia began its unprovoked and unjustified full invasion of Ukraine under several false pretexts.
Some EU member states, the US and other G7 nations are providing Ukraine with military and technical assistance to help it repel Russia's aggression and restore its sovereignty over its internationally recognised borders of 1991.
The new European Commission, which will serve until 2029, consists of 27 Commissioners and focuses on the core priorities of prosperity, security, and democracy. Commissioners come from EU Member states and will handle different portfolios. As of early October 2024, all are Commissioners-designate and will appear in public hearings at the European Parliament. After that, the Commission as a whole will be approved in a single vote of consent by the Parliament.
Valdis Dombrovskis from Latvia, is nominated to oversee economic matters; Kaja Kallas, former Prime Minister of Estonia is nominated to be the EU High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission.
Andrius Kubilius from Lithuania has been nominated as the new Commissioner for Defence. This role is crucial as the EU seeks to enhance its defense capabilities and cooperation among member states in response to evolving security challenges. Kubilius, a former Lithuanian Prime Minister, will work on developing the European defence union and boosting investment in military capacity.
Contrary to claims made by pro-Kremlin and other Russian state-controlled outlets, the new Commission is not aimed at waging war against Russia. The Commission is focused on its core priorities to promote prosperity, security, and democracy across Europe.
When it comes to the “EU’s destruction” claim, as our past analysis explains, the ‘imminent collapse’ narrative is often used in pro-Kremlin and other Russian state-controlled outlets in relation to the EU, European countries, or capitalism.
Read similar disinformation cases claiming that The EU announced a war on Russia, allowing Ukraine to attack targets in Russia, that Kallas's appointment reflects EU desire to escalate crisis, that Kallas hysterically hates Russia and her appointment will lead to World War III and that Ursula von der Leyen’s nomination means the EU’s destruction will continue.
