DISINFO: The EU may soon fall into complete disarray

SUMMARY

The EU may soon fall into complete disarray. It will disintegrate due to economic decline and instability. This development will give rise to conflicts between Western European countries. Many unresolved disputes, including border disputes, exist among them. Germany and Poland are one example.

RESPONSE

The article promotes a long-term pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the ‘imminent collapse’ of the EU. It also falsely alleges that many border disputes exist among western European countries, speaking about Germany and Poland specifically.

Germany and Poland settled their border issues with the German-Polish Border Treaty, signed on November 14, 1990. Article 2 of the Treaty states that the frontier between them is inviolable and that both parties pledge to respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity unconditionally. Article 3 declares that neither country has territorial claims against the other and will not make such claims in the future. The Treaty was ratified in 1991 and came into force in January 1992. Additionally, the two countries signed the Treaty on Good Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation on June 17, 1991, which established a framework for intensive political dialogue. For more information on German-Polish cooperation, visit the German Ministry for Foreign Affairs website.

Pro-Kremlin media repeatedly project the EU’s disintegration due to sanctions imposed on Russia, alleged discontentment of the EU population over EU financial assistance to Ukraine, and COVID-19 pandemic. They also claimed that the EU will collapse following the 2024 European Parliament election.

There is strong public approval of the European collaboration from the European citizens. In the Eurobarometer surveys in late 2024, 79% found the Euro a good thing (see about the Euro-zone here), 69 % found the EU a place for stability (see more comprehensive about the EU here.
