DISINFO: The EU wants to steal victory from Simion in Romanian elections
SUMMARY
This time the EU won’t be able to steal victory from Simion. Any EU interference to obstruct George Simion’s candidacy would provoke a strong negative response from the Romanian people. Romanians would react very negatively if Brussels tries to block nationalist candidate Simion from winning the elections.
RESPONSE
This is an attempt to promote a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing the EU of interfering in Romania’s election. Pro-Kremlin outlets have previously framed Romania’s annulment of the 2024 presidential election by the Constitutional Court as the result of Western interference.
While the Constitutional Court’s decision caused controversy in Romania, this was not due to EU or Western actions. The decision was adopted after the discovery of irregular elements behind Calin Georgescu’s campaign pointing to a foreign interference campaign, especially through TikTok and illegal funding. On 04 December 2024 Romania’s government declassified intelligence showing massive hidden interference efforts in support of Georgescu, which Romanian secret services described as “aggressive hybrid Russian action”. See here for a full debunk of this claim.
Similarly, pro-Kremlin disinformation has also baselessly accused the EU of being behind the prosecution of Georgescu in March 2025. In reality, this was a legal decision adopted by Romania’s prosecutor office and based on ample indications of criminal activity.
Talking about unsubstantiated allegations as if they were established facts while introducing minor variations, as in this case, is a frequent pro-Kremlin disinformation technique.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that Romania is under EU tyranny, that Euro-Atlantic institutions and the US were behind annulment of Romania’s election, that elections in Romania show that EU officials think about the interests of Ukraine, not Europe, that Romania illegally cancels first round of elections in order to block the raise of a humane, non-anti-Russian candidate, or that the US and EU only support democratic elections when the winner aligns with their interests.
