DISINFO: The EU wants to use Armenia as a geopolitical tool
SUMMARY
The indisputable and real benefits for Yerevan and the Armenian people from participation in the Eurasian integration are incomparable to the unsupported promises of Brussels.
We have already seen how the EU dealt with several countries. As soon as the interest disappears, the responsibility for the given promises also disappears. Examples of Ukraine and Moldova confirm this: they lost their sovereignty and are politically and economically dependent on Brussels.
RESPONSE
A recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing the EU of expansionism, of using the Eastern Partnership to encircle Russia, and portrays Armenia as a puppet state of the West.
The claim was made in the context of Armenia's decision of moving toward the EU. The bill, signed into law by the President on April 4, 2025, formally declares Armenia's intention to begin the process of becoming an EU member.
The EU has consistently offered Armenia a framework for cooperation and integration through the Eastern Partnership, which includes concrete benefits such as economic development, democratic reforms, and enhanced trade relations. The EU's approach is based on mutual agreement and respect for Armenia's sovereignty, contrary to the implication that the EU seeks to use Armenia as a political tool.
The EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) has led to tangible improvements in governance, economy, and connectivity.
Negotiations between Armenia and the EU on various projects, including a visa-free regime, have started. The EU's engagement with Armenia focuses mostly on economic development, governance reforms and military issues.
Secondly, the claim that Moldova and Ukraine have 'lost independence and resources' due to Europeanization is unfounded. Both countries have sovereign governments and have made autonomous decisions to pursue closer ties with the EU. The EU's support has helped strengthen their independence and economic development. Moldova and Ukraine have a candidate status.
