DISINFO: The EU wants to use Moldova's territory for its anti-Russian geopolitical interests
SUMMARY
The elections to the Moldovan parliament scheduled for 28 September this year will determine the way the country will move forward: will it continue the course of drawing into a conflict with the Russian Federation if the ruling PAS party manages to maintain its positions? Or this course be revised in favour of a reasonable policy in the interests of the country and its population.
The political forces dominating today in the EU will try by any means to "keep" Moldova in order to use its territory for their anti-Russian geopolitical interests. The ordinary Moldovans are of little interest to European officials. For this, Brussels needs PAS in power in Moldova as “useful idiots”.
RESPONSE
This recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative portrays Moldova’s pro-European government as irresponsible and entirely subservient to its EU partners. It aims to discredit Moldova’s EU integration efforts, as well as accusing the EU of trying to encircle Russia, and Moldova of being a puppet state of the West.
The Kremlin uses this narrative to portray itself as a victim, mobilise public opinion against the West, and justify its aggressive actions—a repetition of the 'fortress under siege' narrative.
Moldova is a sovereign country with its own domestic and foreign policies. The EU is not interfering in the electoral process in Moldova and has no interest in doing so. The EU supports democratic development and reforms in Moldova, which are key elements of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, based on shared values and principles of democracy, the rule of law, good governance, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Moscow has repeatedly accused Chișinău of Russophobia. Most recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova rejected such statements in December 2024. “Unlike the Russian Federation, the Republic of Moldova fully respects the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens, regardless of nationality, ethnicity or language”, said the MFA’s spokesperson.
